Overview

The ACTION Institute, a new NSF AI Institute led by UC Santa Barbara in collaboration with eleven top U.S. universities, seeks a Software Engineer. This role is central to pioneering research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and computer security. You will design and implement a global testbed infrastructure to support diverse research projects and provide critical software development support, directly contributing to the institute's mission of creating secure and reliable software systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience/training.
• Hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud).
• Proficiency with Kubernetes and Linux server administration.
• Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
• Experience with Git, Jenkins, and CI/CD systems.
• Substantial experience using code libraries and open-source resources.
• Understanding of secure software development practices.
• Advanced skills in software design, implementation, and deployment, including OOP principles.
• Proficiency in Python, C/C++, Java, Javascript, and SQL.
• Competence in writing automation scripts.
• Demonstrated experience with software repositories, testing, and test planning.
• Ability to convey technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
• Must be self-motivated, able to work independently and collaboratively, and meet deadlines.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Special Conditions of Employment

This is a Career position with a fixed end date contingent on funding. The current grant is anticipated to conclude in April 2026, with potential for extension through April 2028 and beyond. Evening and weekend work may be required. A satisfactory criminal history background check is mandatory. UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment.

Days/Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
